A mi me pasa mas o menos lo mismo, ya tengo todo instalado pero el servidor LDAP no me deja arrancarlo ... con las ganas que tengo que hacer funcionar esto... y por lo visto es un bug de LDAP a ver si alguno lo ha podido resolver:

Starting OpenLDAP: slapd - failed.
The operation failed but no output was produced. For hints on what went
wrong please refer to the system's logfiles (e.g. /var/log/syslog) or
try running the daemon in Debug mode like via "slapd -d 16383" (warning:
this will create copious output).

Below, you can find the command line options used by this script to
run slapd. Do not forget to specify those options if you
want to look to debugging output:
slapd -h 'ldap:///' -g openldap -u openldap -f /etc/ldap/slapd.conf

Sobre los problemas con LDAP, no es probable que el problema sean un "bug" en LDAP. El problema viene de la configuración inicial de LDAP. ¿Has mirado los logs que se indican en los mensajes posteriores al inicio fallido de LDAP?
